What is a Radio Scanner or listen only Radio?

It is a piece of equipment that can be portable or fixed that enables you to listen to other Radio Transmissions. These would include things like Aircraft, CB Radio, Telephones, Police Radio, Coast Guard and other Radio Communications.

Do you Need A License to Listen to A Scanner?

No you do not need to have a License to own or use a Radio Scanner. As a matter of fact such a thing does not exist to my knowledge.

Are Radio Scanners Legal?

Firstly it is Perfectly Legal to own and use a Radio Scanner. There are however Certain Caviates that need to be added to the mix here. It is Legal to listen to Radio Transmissions that are meant for General reception!

However as far as I am aware you cannot listen to: Illegal Radio Stations, Telephone Conversations, Police Radio Transmissions etc. I am sure you get the genera idea here.
Interestingly I have heard it said that you can listen to Emergency Services Radio Transmissions if you do not act upon the information you hear, this as far as I am aware is not now the case. if you are planning to Buy a Scanner then it is best to do your own research and Due Diligence to make sure you are using the Radio Scanner Within the Law.
