What are Two Way Radios? 2 Way Radio
A two way radio is quite simply what it sounds like, a radio that both transmits and receives audio (Voice) transmissions.
A two way radio is available as a hand held radio, a fixed or base station radio, and a mobile radio (Fitted in a car or vehicle)
Does a two way radio require a License?
The answer is both Yes and No
You can use a Two Way Radio without a license but it does have its limitations. There are 2 Way Radios you can use without a license and a different 2 Way Radio that needs a license to use it. For example the License Free range is not so good, as the sets are not as powerful as a Fully Licensed Radio. The fully Licensed Radios are more powerful and will be fixed or tuned to a particular Frequency for you to use. A Licensed Radio is also built a bit better and will last longer and stand up to the rigors of use in a far better manner.
Walkie Talkies
Handheld and Portable Radios or Walkie Talkies as they are far better known, are just lightweight 2 way radios that work on a lower power. This type of Radio is used in its cheapest form by young children to have some fun in the garden or around the house for example. They can run right up to an expensive Walkie Talkie that is used by professionals such as builders on sites or even search and rescue organisations such as the Coast guard etc.
so really there is truly something for everyone in this range of radios. Go and get a set for yourself and have some fun!
Handheld CB Radios
Off course you can also get small Portable CB Radios that you can use on multiple channels. These also can be great fun and do not require a License to operate. They are somewhat limited in their use but do provide a very usable piece of equipment. They use rechargeable batteries and if you have a charger and some spares will give you a useable amount of time to enjoy them. Some sets can be used with the rechargables and also be plugged into a charger or cigarette lighter in a car to give continuous use.
